The NUJ has launched an award no newspaper would want to win - Most Hypocritical Local Media Campaign of the Year.
It has been launched in the same week as Press Gazette's Regional Press Awards.
The NUJ says: "Good luck to all the NUJ members nominated" for the RPAs but adds: "While bosses and their sponsors quaff champagne most local press journalists will be struggling to fill the paper with limited staff and no interest from their owners.
"So the NUJ is launching the Most Hypocritical Local Media Campaign of the Year award, aimed at all the papers who urge readers to save the local economy while chucking profit-making workers onto the dole."
Union members are urged to send in their nominations by email and are promised confidentiality.
