Newsquest to axe Colchester Gazette editor

The NUJ has condemned a proposal by Newsquest to axe the position of editor of the daily Colchester Gazette and up to 13 editorial jobs on the paper.
According to the union, management want subbing of the paper to be moved to Basildon, where Newsquest publishes the Southend Echo, and the Gazette’s two editions - which cover Colchester and the coast - will be merged into one.
NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Our members in Colchester are not fooled by the notion of a paper without an editor. The daily paper in the area will effectively be an edition of the Basildon publication."
