Ashes and Bristol murder dominate news coverage


Two contrasting stories, the England cricket team retaining the Ashes in Australia and the murder of Jo Yeates in Bristol, dominated the UK news agenda over the Christmas period in the week ending January 2, according to journalisted.

Coverage of the Ashes, retained by England with the final test still to be completed, generated 482 articles; the murder of Jo Yeates, generated 171 articles, with her landlord Chris Jefferies arrested and then released without charge, 106 articles; Northern Ireland's water shortage, after thawing burst pipes and left reservoirs dry, 127 articles.

Covered little, according to journalisted were: Haiti's cholera epidemic, with official figures showing a significant jump in the death toll to over 3,000, 9 articles; the opening of a German inquiry into alleged poisoning of a former KGB Russian journalist and his wife, 6 articles; a student occupation at Kent University continuing for 26 days and throughout Christmas, with students now facing a court summons, 4 articles.
