Independent keeps royal wedding off the front

The Independent lives up to its roots today by being the only national newspaper not to carry a picture of Prince William and Kate Middleton and the story of their forthcoming wedding on the front page.

Instead the Independent opts for the financial crisis in Ireland. Since the Independent was launched in October 1986 it has set itself apart from the rest of the British press by not going gaga over news about the royal family.

The wedding story is carried inside on the news pages of the Independent along with a comment piece by Julie Burchill who claims Kate Middleton is "marrying beneath her" and describes the royal family as "the weirdest clan this side of the Addams family".

Elsewhere, even the Financial Times carries a picture of the "happy couple" on the front page. The Sun has a 12 page royal wedding pullout and the Telegraph and Daily Mail both have 16-page souvenir specials.
  • When Prince Charles and Camilla announced they were to wed, the Independent carried on its front page all the news readers may have missed. You can see it here on Currybet.
