Southern Daily Echo FoC facing redundancy

The NUJ FoC at the Newsquest-owned Southern Daily Echo in Southampton, Simon Straker, the paper's deputy sports editor, is understood to be one of the staff selected for redundancy.

Straker, who led the chapel during a series of strikes which ended with journalists getting a pay rise, is said to be going through the paper's appeal process over the redundancy.

A ballot on industrial action over staff cuts is currently taking place at the Echo and the result should be declared next Monday.

Echo staff join Argus in Newsquest strike action

NUJ members at the Southern Daily Echo in Southampton are to join their colleagues at The Argus, Brighton, by taking strike action next week after an unsuccessful meeting with the title's management, journalism.co.uk reports today.

The Echo journalists will strike next Tuesday and Wednesday, December 7 and 8. The same days as journalists on The Argus are taking action over the transfer of six subbing jobs to Southampton and the company's pay freeze.

Echo staff have already held a two-day strike, on November 9 and 10, in protest at the pay freeze.

Campaign slogan right on the Monet

The Southern Daily Echo has come up with a brilliant name for its campaign for Southampton City Council to sell off some of the thousands of pictures which it has no room to display.
Under the slogan - 'Show Us The Monet!' - the Echo has called for a review of how many works the city needed, what could be sold off and how the money could be better used in supporting the arts.
