Salmond questions the 'extraordinary level of redundancy' planned at Record and Sunday Mail

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has questioned "the extraordinary level of redundancy" being considered at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, where Trinity Mirror management has announced up to 90 redundancies among journalists.

Answering an emergency question at the Scottish Parliament, Salmond said: "It does seem an extraordinary level of redundancy that's been contemplated in the Record and Sunday Mail, and, although I haven't always seen eye-to-eye with the Record in terms of its editorial view, nonetheless it's a hugely important Scottish institution.

"The coverage it's able to give, and has given, to Scottish news and current affairs has been an important part of the fabric of Scotland."

NUJ officials are holding talks with Daily Record management representatives today about the redundancy plan.

Dispute ends at Daily Record and Sunday Mail

NUJ members at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail have voted to call off their industrial action following a lengthy chapel meeting, the union said today.
The dispute had been about compulsory redundancies and changes to staff contracts.
NUJ Scottish organiser Paul Holleran said:"Through a mixture of industrial action, political pressure and legal threat we have made progress on the issues and moved to a negotiated position which the chapel are prepared to accept, although it has to be said, are far from happy at what has happened in recent months."
