NUJ welcomes Rusbridger's pay and benefits cut
The NUJ has welcomed Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger's decision to reduce his pay and benefits - and urged other media executives to follow his example.
Rusbridger is to take a 10 per cent pay cut; his salary for 2012-2013 will be £395,010 compared with £438,900 in the current financial year.
His annual pension contribution will be reduced to £75,000 and the total reduction in his salary and pension package will amount to 19 per cent in the next year starting in April.
Barry Fitzpatrick, NUJ deputy general secretary, said: “I welcome Alan’s response to the NUJ’s suggestion that he should take a pay cut and show a lead to executives within the industry at a time when many journalists face redundancy and pay freezes.
"I hope that others including Sly Bailey, chief executive of Trinity Mirror, and Richard Desmond owner of the Express newspapers, will now be following suit.”
