Barry Fitzpatrick elected NUJ Deputy Gen Sec

Barry Fitzpatrick, the NUJ's head of publishing, has been elected deputy general secretary of the NUJ beating Helen Gavaghan and Coventry freelance Chris Youett.

Fitzpatrick has long experience working for unions and was a Sogat official at the time of the bitter Wapping dispute when Rupert Murdoch sacked his Fleet Street printers.

Fitzpatrick got 2,444 votes; Youett 1,326; and Gavaghan 473. Total votes: 4,243.

The ballot had to be re-run at a cost of around £20,000 after problems emerged over membership data.

The ballot came after the former deputy Michelle Stanistreet took over as NUJ general secretary from Jeremy Dear, who decided not to seek re-election, last year.
