NCTJ floats idea of journalism foundation course

The National Council for the Training of Journalists is considering developing a foundation level programme of study and examinations in journalism.

The course would be aimed at 16 to 18 year olds in colleges and schools, traditional community or citizen journalists, bloggers, and groups where improved writing skills and the ability to communicate to a wide audience would be advantageous.

Success on the course would be marked with a "foundation certificate" - a qualification in its own right.

The NCTJ is also considering if the foundation course could be offered as a “summer school” for potential undergraduates or be used as part of a community outreach programme to help give people a greater voice in local democracy. It could also be used as a progression for those wishing to take a Diploma course at some stage during their training.

Journalism academics are currently being canvassed for their views on the proposed new qualification.
