Lincs Echo latest Northcliffe daily to go weekly

It is understood that some of the staff have been told that Northcliffe's daily Lincolnshire Echo is to go weekly, probably in October.

Northcliffe has already announced that three of its daily newspapers, in Torquay, Exeter and Scunthorpe, were to switch to a weekly format.

The Express & Echo in Exeter announced in August that it was switching to weekly publication, following the Torquay Herald Express and the Scunthorpre Evening Telegraph.

The Echo describes itself as having been "reporting life in Lincoln since 1893." Its latest ABC figure was 17,151 copies a day. In the late 1970s the Echo was selling around 34,000 copies a day and the city had a weekly paper, the Lincoln Chronicle, published by the Lincolnshire Standard Group.

Update: Northcliffe has confirmed today (Friday) the final edition of the daily Echo will be published on Friday 14 October, with the new paid-for weekly launched on Thursday 20 October.

Around five journalists’ jobs are at risk of redundancy as a result of the change, out of a total editorial staff of around 28. In addition the deputy editor, Martin Mammatt, has been made compulsorily redundant.

  • Northcliffe is to move the editorial operation of the Western Daily Press back to Bristol – just 18 months after it was moved 150 miles away to Plymouth, HoldtheFrontPage reports today.
