Simon Kelner is back as editor of the Independent as it and the Independent on Sunday come under new ownership following completion of the purchase by Independent Print Limited, the company owned by the Lebedev family.
Evgeny Lebedev, chairman of Independent Print Ltd, announced that Kelner is appointed editor of the Independent, and has also been appointed a director of Independent Print Limited.
Kelner remains editor-in-chief of the Independent titles. Lebedev said:"I am delighted to appoint such a talented editor and great newspaperman who is committed to bringing his unique style and energy to edit the Independent."
Kelner was appointed editor of the Independent in 1998 and oversaw the transition to the compact format in 2003. He has been managing director for the past two years and has been interim editor since the departure of Roger Alton in April.
Andrew Mullins, managing director of the London Evening Standard, has been appointed managing director of the Independent titles also, and to the board of Independent Print Limited. Andreas Whittam Smith, the c0-founder of the Independent, has also joined the board of Independent Print Limited.
