I was at the Local Heroes 2010 conference at Kingston University yesterday, jointly organised with Press Gazette. Here are some of my favourite quotes:
Sir Ray Tindle on the strength of weekly newspapers: "Some of my papers have survived the war against the Kaiser, the Great Depression and the war against Hitler. One even survived Napoleon."
Ex-Gloucestershire Echo editor Anita Syvret on daily papers being printed the day before: "Is there any point in a daily newspaper that's last with the news?"
Nigel Lowther editor of the independent Cleethorpes Chronicle: "There are gaps in the market as the big companies make massive cut-backs to keep up their big profit margins. We're happy with 5%."
Betty Drummond, md of Champion Media free newspapers on Mersrseyside: "The big groups are focusing on the bottom line and not on their newspapers."
Sheila Prophet, editor of ultra local news site Fulhamsw6.com: "I don't go to the council for stories. They would probably give them to (the council-owned) Hammersmith and Fulham News."
Ex-Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson: "Putting 90 % of a newspaper's content online is madness. This free-for-all must end."
Eric Gordon, editor of the Camden New Journal: "I wasn't expecting so many people in suits."
