Health Secretary Andy Burnham believes there is a significant public benefit in government departments putting more ad spend into local media, according to the Newspaper Society.
The NS quotes Burnham from a Newspaper Conference lunch on Monday, when he was speaking to regional press Lobby journalists.
He said he had become interested in issues surrounding the local media industry during his tenure as Culture and Media Secretary and added: “There’s an argument there’s more of a public benefit in helping sustain a news source by considering whether more ad spend could be routed through local papers than in just sustaining an advertising site.”
