Telegraph agrees three-year pay rise with NUJ

NUJ officials at the Telegraph in London have signed a deal guaranteeing journalists a pay rise for the next three years, the union reports today.
The deal covers journalists on the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, and Telegraph.co.uk. and gives an increase immediately, and in January 2010, and 2011. The annual rises will be 2 percent, 1.5 percent, and 2.5 percent – with the last year open to re-negotiation if the inflation rate is more than 3.5 or less than 1.5 percent.
With many media companies imposing pay freezes because of the economic downturn, the NUJ is hoping that the Telegraph have set a target for other journalists' chapels to aim for.
Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ deputy general secretary, said: “It has been a difficult time at the Telegraph with redundancies and big changes to working practices. But NUJ members there have still managed to negotiate a pay rise – which is an example for other chapels to follow.”
