NoW row: NUJ calls for Coulson to 'stand down'

The NUJ has joined the calls demanding a judicial investigation into the telephone tapping allegations surrounding the News of the World and has said the paper's former editor, Andy Coulson, should stand down from his position as David Cameron's PR chief.
Generals secretary Jeremy Dear said: "The NUJ as a union puts great importance on its code of conduct for journalists and has long been concerned at the activities of some publications, in particular the News of the World.
"Our members have raised this issue from their personal experiences and our conference is on record in demanding a full judicial inquiry. The latest revelations in the New York Times make it even more urgent this inquiry goes ahead.
"In the meantime it is our view that Andy Coulson the ex-editor of the News of the World should stand down from his government position. Serious questions now have to be answered about his knowledge of and use of illegal telephone taps and it is unacceptable that he should be in charge of government communications until these matters have been fully investigated"
