News of the World managing editor Bill Akass told Steve Hewlett on BBC Radio 4's The Media Show today that the NoW had the story which led to the resignation of FA chairman Lord Triesman when it was splashed by the Mail on Sunday.
But he said the NoW decided not to publish the story, in which Triesman's allegations about bribery of World Cup referees was secretly recorded, because: "We thought the information was too thin."
Akass also strongly defended the NoW's story on Edward Terry, father of England football captain John Terry, supplying cocaine to an undercover reporter, which a judge yesterday described as "entrapment". Akass said the story was based on information received and was not "a fishing expedition".
