NUJ aims to put Sly Bailey's pay under spotlight

NUJ shareholders are planning to highlight the pay of Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey and her colleagues tomorrow, at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting at the London Hilton in Canary Wharf.
They want to question the behaviour of Trinity Mirror senior executives in a year which saw nearly 1,7000 employees sacked.
The union says Bailey received a 100 per cent pay increase in 2009 - from £757,000 to £1.43million - despite a 41 per cent drop in pre-tax profits over the period.
NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: "Hundreds of talented, hardworking journalists were thrown onto the scrapheap by Trinity Mirror, an employer entirely indifferent to whether they would be able to find another job or even afford to keep their homes.
“If only Sly Bailey was just an isolated parasite. Unfortunately, she and her team are simply the latest in a long line of senior media group executives happy to engage in self-congratulatory financial backslapping at the expense of hardworking and often poorly paid staff. In fact, Trinity Mirror’s senior executives happily grabbed a grand total of almost £4m last year.”
